HeartMenders Cardiac Rehabilitation

William Newton Hospital's cardiac rehabilitation program began in 1986, providing a medically-supervised opportunity for clients to establish an exercise program and receive education concerning CAD, heart health diets, aerobic exercises, medication, smoking cessation, and stress management in a controlled, monitored environment. HeartMenders is pre-approved by Medicare for 12 weeks and by BCBS for 6-12 weeks depending on policy carried. We work within insurance policy guidelines for all other insurances on an individual basis.

Criteria for Phase 2 cardiac rehab are that the client has experienced one of the following in the last 12 months:

  • Documented angina
  • Myocardial infarction
  • Percutaneous Transluminal Coronary Angioplasty
  • Stent placement
  • Heart valve repair/replacement
  • Heart transplant
  • Congestive heart failure (added to the criteria in 2014)
  • LVAD left ventricular assist device

Phase 4 is available for graduates or for those who do not meet the above criteria who wish to maintain or establish a structured, medically-supervised exercise program. These clients have vital signs monitored daily and wear a monitor every six weeks. This cost has been maintained at $5.80 per visit to be affordable.

Both the cardiologist and primary physician receive daily logs of activity, vital signs are provided to clients to take to each office visit, and a discharge summary is mailed to their provider's office.
