Public Invited to Surgery Center Opening

William Newton Hospital is commemorating its recent expansion with a grand opening and ribbon cutting for the H. L. Snyder Medical Foundation Surgery Center at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, March 8. The event will start on the north side of the hospital at 1300 E. Fifth Ave. in Winfield.

Hospital CEO Ben Quinton states, “This expansion demonstrates William Newton Hospital is a model for success in rural healthcare. We will honor the donors, trustees, providers, employees, volunteers, and community members who made this possible.”

United States Sen. Jerry Moran is slated to address hospital guests.

“Senator Moran helps champion healthcare in our state and nation,” says Quinton. “We welcome him to Winfield and thank him for his assistance in obtaining state tax credits to fund the cath lab.”

The celebration completes phase one of six for a master facilities plan and capital campaign coined the ‘Second Century Campaign’ to coincide with the hospital’s approaching 100-year milestone.

A special announcement will be made detailing the single largest philanthropic contribution to the William Newton Healthcare Foundation to date.

“The grand opening will not only celebrate the gifts we’ve received throughout the campaign, but provide a platform to share this unprecedented news and the story behind it,” remarks Annika Morris, foundation director.

Finishing Phase One**

The northeast corner of the hospital has been the phase one focus and began with a groundbreaking in August of 2018. The expansion included an orthopaedic operating room, pre/post-operative care units, cardiovascular catheterization laboratory (or ‘cath lab’), chapel, and two waiting areas. Materials management, central sterile, and pharmacy were also relocated and renovated to create space for the surgery center.

Prior to the expansion, patients were transported back and forth between surgery and ambulatory care units located across the hospital and on separate floors. All surgery services are now centralized.

William Newton Hospital Operating Room Manager Lindsey King, RN, says the new space is working well. “Patients have more privacy before and after surgery. Everything is connected and is more efficient for surgical staff, anesthesia providers, and surgeons.”

The H. L. Snyder Medical Foundation Surgery Center began providing patient care in early January, with the first cath lab patient treated on January 15.

Cath Lab Manager Christopher Graham, MHA, RT(R), is excited to help bring this new service to Winfield and the surrounding communities. “When you’re talking about the heart, or any vessels of the body, time is extremely important. The sooner those patients can be treated the better quality of life they can have.”

A Culture of Philanthropy

Improving quality of life for area residents has been a theme throughout the project.

Morris says maintaining access to healthcare in Cowley County and its neighboring regions is closely connected to philanthropy. “In talking to people about the campaign, they’re surprised to learn William Newton Hospital isn’t supported by local taxes. Our community has stepped up to make quality healthcare sustainable.”

The Second Century Campaign raised a total of $4.6 million during phase one. As of December 31, 2019, the campaign has garnered $500,000 pledged by the H. L. Snyder Medical Foundation, $688,000 pledged by Winfield Economic Development and local businesses, $250,000 pledged by the William Newton Hospital Auxiliary, $133,000 pledged by hospital and foundation board members, and $227,943 pledged by physicians and hospital employees.

“William and Mary Virginia Newton set the example with the very first gift back in 1923. Our supporters have adopted the ‘We are William Newton’ mindset, sharing a vision for a second century of quality care,” states Morris.

The Snyder Legacy

The surgery center’s namesake symbolizes a dedication to healthcare excellence and gratitude for the generosity of the H. L. Snyder Medical Foundation.

From humble beginnings visiting patients in a horse and buggy, Dr. H. L. Snyder founded a family legacy of commitment to the community. As general surgeons, the Snyder physicians’ practices encompassed a wide range of specialties necessitated by experience and need. Beloved by patients, Snyder physicians shared their unique skills, common sense, and humor with the community.

A love of medicine and care for patients is seemingly imprinted upon H. L. Snyder’s multitude of descendants. As of 2020, this legacy has encouraged five successive generations of physicians and healthcare professionals as well as inspired service by family members in other care professions.

As tribute to the care and concern they showed thousands of patients, the H. L. Snyder Medical Foundation Surgery Center is named in their honor.

H. L. Snyder Medical Foundation representative Hannelore Snyder Brown notes the relationship between the hospital and the Snyder physicians spans nearly a century. “The H. L. Snyder Medical Foundation is honored to be a part of the team whose hard work is exemplified by the opening of this new surgery center,” says Brown. “This recognition of the impact the Snyder physicians have had and their love of Winfield and its surrounding communities is a joy to the family and trustees.”

Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting

The event will begin on the north side of the hospital. Parking is available in the north or south parking lots. Live music by The Scrubs, a local band including hospital physicians, will kick-off the event, followed by a brief presentation.

To follow is a ribbon cutting and group photo with Winfield Area Chamber of Commerce. Walking tours of the expanded facilities begin thereafter. Cake will be served, and tour participants will enjoy giveaways and interactive activities.
