The roster of surgeons at William Newton Hospital in Winfield, Kan. has been growing in connection to the recent expansion of the H. L. Snyder Medical Foundation Surgery Center. The surgery center opened in January and included an additional operating room, pre/post-operative care units, cardiovascular catheterization laboratory, chapel, and two waiting areas.
“The surgery center expansion furthers our vision to increase access to specialty care in the communities we serve,” remarked William Newton Hospital CEO Ben Quinton. “William Newton Hospital has become the most comprehensive and advanced in surgical care in our four-county service area.”
William Newton Orthopaedics
In the fall of 2019, William Newton Hospital partnered with Advanced Orthopaedic Associates, PA, the largest orthopedic group in Wichita, to open William Newton Orthopaedics located at the Winfield Healthcare Center.
Kenneth Jansson, MD, board certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery with a subspecialty in orthopedic sports medicine, was the first to hold clinic hours at the office and specializes in knee surgery. He is also the director of orthopedic sports medicine for Via Christi Health Systems. Dr. Jansson sees patients in Winfield on Fridays.
Shortly after, Phillip Hagan, MD, board certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery, began seeing patients at William Newton Orthopaedics every other Wednesday. He specializes in shoulder surgery and sports medicine.
In June, William Newton Orthopaedics added a third specialist from Advanced Orthopaedic Associates, Harry Morris, MD. Board certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery with a subspecialty in hand surgery, Dr. Morris is also a clinical assistant professor at the University of Kansas School of Medicine Residency Training Program. He visits Winfield one Wednesday per month.
Thomas Hendricks, MD, is board certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery in general orthopedic surgery (part 1). Dr. Hendricks began seeing patients at the Winfield Healthcare Center in July and specializes in total joint reconstruction and revision including hip and knee. He will begin performing surgeries at William Newton Hospital in October.
William Newton Foot & Ankle
Last December, the providers and staff at Walnut Valley Foot Specialists became part of the William Newton Hospital network of clinics forming William Newton Foot and Ankle.
Podiatrists Thomas Lyman, DPM, started practicing in Winfield in 2014. Two years later, Anthony Elliott, DPM, joined the practice. Located at the Physicians Pavilion on the hospital campus, William Newton Foot and Ankle offers both nonsurgical and surgical solutions ranging from orthotic arch supports, injections and shockwave therapy, to reconstructive foot and ankle surgery.
As the region’s only full-time practicing podiatrists, Drs. Lyman and Elliott serve Cowley, Sumner, Chautauqua, Elk, Harper, and Kay counties. An outreach clinic is also offered in Wellington at Sumner County Family Care Center.Lyman performs surgery at WNH
New Equipment
To improve the efficiency of cases, new state-of-the-art equipment was purchased in August. The hospital added a GE Elite OEC MiniView C-Arm with radiographic capabilities. It is used during surgical and orthopedic procedures.
Operated by the surgeon, the imaging equipment improves efficiency and safety. It uses less radiation, protecting patients and staff, and saves approximately 20 minutes per case.
Lindsey King, RN, operating room manager, discussed another benefit, “The mini c-arm allows us to have imaging immediately available without interrupting the radiology schedule.”
Of the surgery center expansion, King said having operating rooms closer to the post-anesthesia care unit has enhanced patient care.
“It’s helped us become more efficient with our surgery schedule. Patients are now recovering within the surgery center, which helps with patient safety and privacy.”
She added the outpatient infusion clinic has grown since moving into the surgery center. “Being in this new space allows us to accommodate these patients’ needs so they don’t have to drive to Wichita for treatment.”
“The physicians doing surgeries in the new center love it,” said Quinton. “Many have commented on how much more efficient it is.”
